Abstract

Background

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of sildenafil citrate (Viagra) in the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) patients with an ED episode of the last two years.

Methods

This was a prospective, randomized, parallel-group, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study. Inclusion criteria were as follows: age 18–64 years, ED episode lasting at least three months, and erectile dysfunction of the last two years. Patients were excluded if they: had diabetes mellitus, high or low levels of blood pressure, were pregnant or lactating, or had any of the following factors: diabetes mellitus, hypertension, or heart or lung disease; or had recently had an MI.

Results

During the study period, 819 patients were included. Of these, 903 patients were included in the first visit, and 569 patients were included in the second visit. The most common adverse events were gastrointestinal (n = 1,973, 75%) and cardiovascular (n = 2,13, 7%). The most common reasons for discontinuing sildenafil in patients with ED episode of the last two years were cardiovascular (n = 6,062, 51%) and renal (n = 1,739, 58%). The most common adverse events were gastrointestinal (n = 5,095, 26%) and cardiovascular (n = 3,016, 13%).

Conclusions

The safety and efficacy of sildenafil treatment in patients with ED were demonstrated by a positive response rate (94.2% in the first visit, 89.8% in the second visit, 82.2% in the third visit, and 76.8% in the fourth visit). Sildenafil treatment in patients with ED was well tolerated and no serious adverse events occurred.

Introduction

ED is a common condition that affects millions of men worldwide. It affects millions of men, including those with heart failure, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and obesity. ED is a common cause of morbidity and mortality in men with heart failure, which may be due to inadequate blood flow and inadequate oxygen supply. Cardiac failure is a significant cause of death in patients with heart failure, affecting approximately 2–6 million men and causing approximately 6 million deaths annually. Despite the fact that this disease is a disease of the heart, it is also a cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with ED. Although there are several clinical studies on the etiology of cardiac failure, the cause of cardiac failure remains unclear, and the risk factors remain unexplained. Thus, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of sildenafil citrate, a new drug, in patients with ED.

Sildenafil citrate, a new drug, was evaluated for the treatment of ED patients with an ED episode of the last two years. The study was conducted in three phase 1 studies: one, a double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study in 10 patients with ED, and the second, a prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, open-label study in 30 patients with ED.

Erectile dysfunction is a common cause of morbidity and mortality in men with heart failure and a significant risk factor for cardiovascular disease in men with heart failure. ED is a common cause of death in the general population and is estimated to be approximately 1.2 million men worldwide. The number of deaths is believed to be higher in men with ED than in men without the condition. This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of sildenafil citrate in the treatment of ED patients with an ED episode of the last two years.

Inclusion criteria were as follows: age 18–64 years, ED episode lasting at least three months, and ED in the last two years.
